Travelling in Uzbekistan & Kazakhstan by rail for over 3500km, it was time to say goodbye to my new favorite mode of transport, the sleeping train. As in Kyrgyzstan & Tajikistan there is hardly more then 500km of rail and most of it useless for getting around the country.
Arriving in Bishkek it was welcoming seeing other tourist again and being able to communicate in English again instead of pointing, grunting and drawing things like in Kazakhstan. It seems in Kazakhstan 1 in a million speaks English and with only a 15 million big population the number of conversation partners is rather limited.
From Bishkek the next stop was Osh, in the south. Getting to Osh took a bit more time(and patience) then expected. Once arrived at the Bishkek Avtovakzal(the main bus station) I had to find the right taxi, at the station the big busses all depart from inside the terminal, all smaller mini-busses and shared taxis are waiting outside the station on adjoining streets, parking lots and any available free space.
As I arrived late at the bus station, most taxis for Osh had allready left and my options were limited, in the end it took about 5 hours of waiting for the taxi to fill up with enough people to leave.
My taxi took me to Jalaj-Abad (+/- 2 hours from Osh) but due to the late hour of departure and the long drive we arrived at 1 o'clock at night, naturally all taxi connections to Osh were long gone. During a late night dinner with the driver I ran into the local English teacher who kindly invited me to crash at his place for the night and as he was going to Osh the next day anyway he could give me a lift in the morning.
From Osh the plan was to embark on the Pamir highway to travel to 'the roof of the world'. Getting started was a bit difficult, arranging a Jeep is not to hard, however finding other tourists to share the costs is, in the end I met another Dutch guy to share the costs with and after he got all his paperwork right we left the next morning early for Tajikistan.
The border crossing, at 4282mtr height, between Kyrgyzstan & Tajikistan was smooth and without any problems and no tedious baggage checks, the latter might have something to do with the driver handing over bags of drinks and watermelons to the customs officials...
Arriving at the Karakol lake(at 3900mtr altitude) we slept in a home-stay in the village of the same name, luckily with a fire heating the place during the cold night. The next day would be a short day but we did cross the highest point en-route, the Ak-Baital pass at 4655mtr, to Murgab(3576mtr). The ride only took about 1,5 hours mainly due to the driver now and then getting close to 120km/h which occasionally resulted in near head-aching collisions with the roof of the car when he overlooked a pothole or bump in the road and bounced over it at lightning speed.
Next morning we set out for the 325km long drive to Khorog in the west, which took 8 hours including two more mountain passes(4137mtr & 4272mtr) and numerous tea stops and one stop including hot fresh yak-milk.
From Khorog there are 2 possibilities to get to Dushanbe, either a long car ride (16-20 hours) or flying. Of course I opted for flying. Arriving at the airport at 7.30 in the morning trying to score a seat on the 16seater plane we first got told that there would be no flights that day and we should come back another day. Disappointed we went outside and started to bargain for a Jeep to take us to Dushanbe, however when the taxi was already coming to pick us up, an airplane landed and someone else informed us that there actually would be a second flight. Rushing back to the ticket-office we handed over our passports and the 2nd big wait started. After a lot of uncertainty & waiting, we finally took off at 16:30 for Dushanbe.
The flight itself, in a trusty Russian Antonov plane, was without a doubt the best flight I've ever taken so far, with the airplane scooting through valleys, in between mountains instead of flying over them.
From Dushanbe I will be heading back to Holland in a week, back to rain, windmills & clogs.
